Obituary for Joan Y. Stankowski

Joan Y. Shreve Stankowski, 88, of Waterford and formerly of Erie, passed away peacefully Monday November 28, 2022, at her residence. She was born in Erie on October 20, 1934, daughter of the late Kenneth R. and Jessie "Maxine" Amidon Shreve.
 
Joan graduated from Edinboro University in 1989 where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Education. She worked as an instructional aide at Northwest Tri-County Intermediate Unit #5 teaching special needs children. She was a former, active, member of Calvary Evangelical Covenant Church where she sang in the choir and was involved with the children's choir and ministry. A member of the Siebenbuerger Lamplighters, Joan also sang in various quartets and trios over the years. She served as past president and honorary member of the Pennsylvania and national PTA and was a long-time learner at the Erie Bible Institute. As a child she loved frequenting Findley Lake, NY where she would spend time at her grandma's house. Her passion was horses and music. She enjoyed her family and genealogy, working in the garden, ice skating, drives in the country, and was a very loving and giving person in so many ways. Joan enjoyed her grandchildren's athletic and arts events also.
 
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome W. Stankowski; her son, Jon Jay Stankowski; her grandson, Gregery Scott Nelson; and her brother, Richard Shreve.
 
Survivors include three daughters, JoAnn Nelson (Jeff) of Waterford, Jeri Lynn Arbaney (Marty) of Austin, CO, and Jodi Rae Schersten (Randy) of Millcreek; her daughter in law, Susan Richardson Stankowski of Mill Village; four grandchildren, Jessica Nelson Jones (Hannah), Leigh Ann Nelson Williams (Tim), Lindsey Stankowski Phelps (Jeremy), and Stefanie Stankowski; eight great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Sally Jackson of Austin, CO; and many nieces and nephews.
 
Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Rd., on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and are invited to services there on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
 
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army, 1022 Liberty St, Erie, PA 16502 or the Mill Village Fire Department, 14408 N. Main St., Waterford, PA 16441.
