Obituary for Berneice Mussett

Berneice Yeast Mussett, 82, of Erie, passed away Thursday April 6, 2023 at Manchester Commons. She was born in Dunkirk, NY on September 6, 1940 a daughter of the late Casimir and Katherine Raymondo Yeast.

Berneice graduated from Edinboro High School and worked in the cafeteria at both Wilson and Roosevelt Middle Schools for 20 years until her retirement in 1973. Students loved her quick wit and humor. She was an excellent homemaker who always put her kids and family first. She was a loving wife to her husband, married for 44 years, with a bond that never wavered. She had a special relationship with both of her sons. She was extremely proud of them; she was their confidant and always guided them with love, honesty, and sound advice. Her grandchildren always brought a smile to her face, and she loved them dearly.

She expanded her love of children through becoming a foster parent, impacting many children throughout the years. She was recognized publicly in the Erie Times for the impact she made through the foster care program.

She was loved by so many through the years…
She was a neighborhood favorite, some even considered her a “ second mother”.
She had a special bond with her sisters and brothers, her home was their home, and she was always there for them in their times of need. Whether that meant a place to stay, money to get back on their feet, or just for some sound advice…she was there.
Her many nieces and nephews often stated she was their “favorite aunt” and have fond memories of spending time with her, playing board games, or just visiting.

In her later years, her time spent in assisted living brought new friendships. Many considered her “the chairman of the board” at her lunch/game table, and fought just to sit next to her! Some considered her “the sister they never had”. Everyone loved her sense of humor and sweet smile, she was one of a kind, and a favorite of staff members and residents alike.

Throughout her life, Berneice has made an impact on everyone she’s touched. She was loved by so many, will be greatly missed, and will be forever remembered.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, David W. Mussett, Sr. and two brothers, Stanley and John Yeast.

Survivors include two sons, David W. Mussett, Jr. (Gina) of Edinboro and Dr. Brian Mussett of Erie; three grandchildren, Kelsey Mussett and Dr. Colby Mussett (Anne), both of Bristow, VA, and Olivia Mussett of Edinboro; two brothers, Edward Yeast (Chris) of Erie and Cas Yeast (Marilyn) of Edinboro; three sisters, Shirley Brace and Betty Riolo, both of Erie, and Theresa Kuligowski of Cleveland; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. Private burial will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery.
